How to Choose the Best Site for Your Pole Barn

Deciding to build a pole barn is a great way to maximize the space on your property. There are a few things to consider when determining the right site to construct the pole barn.

Drainage - Make sure the location has good draining in order to avoid flooding the pole barn. To determine if a location is a good candidate for a pole barn, walk around the site during a rain storm to get a good picture of where the water naturally pools. Any standing water is a good indication the draining at that site is not optimal.

Climate - Take the location's climate into consideration. In hot climates, position the pole barn out of direct sun to keep the pole barn cool. In colder climates, take advantage of the sun to heat the pole barn. Also, position the pole barn in a way so that it is blocked from any high winds that may occur.

Level - It is imperative that the site the pole barn goes on is level. Having a level site will also help with drainage and avoid pooling and flooding. It may be necessary to bring in additional topsoil to level a site. This will be an additional cost and should be factored into the final price.

Location - Picking a good location on your property is probably the most important part of finding the best site for your pole barn. If the pole barn is to be used for livestock and animals, it is necessary that there is running water and electricity. Picking a site that already has access to existing utilities will help save money and time in the installation. Also, make sure the pole barn is close to the driveway for easy access to load and unload supplies and livestock. Ideally, the pole barn will be located near the house, but not so near that the house can still smell and hear any livestock living in the pole barn.
