Now that you have your pole barn constructed, it’s time to make the most efficient use of the space. Organizing your pole barn is different than organizing a traditional timber-framed building because of the different construction techniques used. Here are five tips for organizing your pole barn that will help you make use of every inch of space.
1. Install Pegboard
If your poles are square rather than circular, install pegboard all down the surface of the poles on all four sides. This will give you optimal storage space to hang hooks for tools, saddles, and any other supplies you may find useful while using your pole barn. You can even hang buckets off the hooks to hold feed for your livestock.
2. Hang ‘Em High
Don’t forget to look up when seeking storage space in your pole barn. Using a simple pulley mechanism, you can conveniently hang everything from bicycles to landscaping tools, to extra bales of hay. When not in use, you can use the same pulley to retract the items back up to the ceiling of the pole barn.
Pre-made hanging pulley systems are available at hardware stores. Or, you can fashion your own pulley system with the appropriate hardware and rope.
3. Make a Collapsible Workbench
When you need a workbench, it’s great to keep it inside your pole barn, but it can take up a lot of space. Instead, make a collapsible workbench so you can open it up when you need it and collapse it when you need the floor space for other activities.
4. Put Hanging Storage Pockets on the Doors
Hanging storage on the inside of your pole barn doors allows you to store smaller items, like keys, small pieces of hardware and other things. To hang, simply purchase clear plastic storage pockets, and install hooks on the pole barn doors to hold the upper grommets of the storage unit.
5. Stack Wood Alongside Empty Space
The tendency is to stack wood along with an inside wall. However, that takes up valuable wall space inside the pole barn. Instead, stack wood alongside empty space, so the wood actually serves as an extra wall on your pole barn. It will still be protected under the roof, and you’ll have extra protection inside the pole barn.
